Seriously?

I just had to post this.  My cousin is a FAR to the right conservative.  He tends to find "socialist, communist liberalism" in everything.   He called Madonna's performance at the Super Bowl "The luciferian symbolism during the Maddona halftime show was thick... Satan worship in full effect."  Now he is going off on a rant about the Dr. Seuss movie "The Lorax."  He wrote on Facebook "Took the kids to "The Lorax" last night.  Can't even see a decent kids movie without the socialist-anti-capitalist-environmentalist agenda anymore. The indoctrination of our kids continues.   there is a time and place to get your views heard, keep it out of the kids movies that is all I ask. Socialism and communism have failed time and again. Capitalism has made this country the most prosperous in the world in a very short time. Now capitalism is under attack like it is something evil. The real evil is government control and that is exactly what socialism and communism is all about."  If you didn’t know, according to Wikipedia, the Lorax is a children's book written by Dr. Seuss and first published in 1971. It chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler. As in most Dr. Seuss works, most of the creatures mentioned are original to the book.  The book is commonly recognized as a fable concerning industrialized society and the danger it poses to nature.  I was just wondering what your thoughts are on his statement about liberalism sneaking into all movies?  I personally believe it is a load of bologna, especially since it is a Dr. Seuss book…give me a break.  He was just trying to teach kids a good lesson:  Respect the environment.

  1. This is not that unusual in this political climate. On its face, of course, is ludicrous to assert that there's a communist ulterior motive in anything by Dr. Seuss, let alone published forty years ago and only know has it been discovered. So thing thing is, does your cousin suffer from a serious affliction of actual paranoid tendencies? The reason I ask is that it's a common denominator of many who act as if Obama is a communist, radical, socialist, Muslim, etc. If there are in reality no enemies, paranoids see them; and their ability to do so is apparently a political virtue among the current, but rapidly desintegrating ranks of white, right-ring die-hards. Look at Saint Rick Sanctorum, for example. Who, aside from Catholic bishops, could see that the efforts to fill in the administrative details of what insurance should cover could convert the HHS administrative regulations as a covert attack on the freedom of religious choice guaranteed by the First Amendment? Or young Miss Fluke from Georgetown as requesting taxpayers to fund with tax dollars contraceptive protection for recreational sex? It's an hysterical form of paranoia that is so whacked out that it is easy to dismiss as crossing over the insanity boundary. It may well be doing that, but it has poisoned the public square with toxicity and turned off too many people with genuine concerns about their country's governance from seriously discharging their civic obligations at a time in history when they are at a low time low in supply and an all time high in demand. I'm sure the kids will survive Dr. Seuss. None of my kids are communists or anti-American, and they were all Dr. Seuss fanatics.

  2. I think that your cousin is a little ridiculous saying that liberalism is sneaking into all movies. Of course there are going to be some movies that show or push liberal ideas, but I do not think that was the purpose of what he saw in the Lorax. As you mentioned Elise, it's a Dr. Seuss movie. Dr. Seuss books along with all other childrens' books often try to convey messages to children. I believe that is all that the movie is tring to do. As industry continues to grow, remember to respect and take care of the environment.

  3. The idea that "The Lorax" is a full of liberalism and a communist agenda is ridiculous. When I heard this last week, my first reaction was to laugh. But then I realized this was a serious issue for far right Conservatives. We have far larger issues to deal with in this country and people are placing insane accusations towards a movie? Come on.
