Conversation Piece

This gives a look at the life of a murder row convict. This should be a conversation starter for sure. It made me angry, to say the least.

  2. What has the world come to? 'Leisure'in prison? That is where tax payers money goes. This reminds me of the discussion DT brought up in class about how some people are against funding 'special aid kids' in school at a young age. If more resources are allocated to these kids, then we would have less people in prison consuming more resources like this 'leisure' man.

  3. Copy and paste the link and it will work. My first year in oral comm, I gave a persuasive essay on why states that do have the death penalty need to create laws that expedite their sentences. The cost of persecuting people under the death penalty is so much (because of the cost of appeals and high publicity) and most of these inmates literally sit there in relative comfort for the rest of their lives. Because our prison system works in a way of retribution instead of rehabilitation, it is pointless to let them sit there when their retribution has ultimately been decided. A ton of tax dollars goes to housing these violent criminals when that money could go to other things (social programs) and that empty space could be used to relieve some of the overcrowding prison system.

This article points out these obvious flaws. The fact that this person is able to send this out is bad but can't be helped because of the first amendment. However, the printing of the article seems to be extremely unethical to me. While sections could be used to highlight the problems with the legal system, the part about his murder victim's father is completely inappropriate.

  4. While I don't agree with capital punishment, I find it absolutely ridiculous that so much money is spent on housing inmates that have received the death penalty. There's no point in giving an individual a certain sentence, if it's going to be overly delayed or not even carried out. Frankly, I don't think our country's prison system serves the purpose it's meant to and it is wasting a lot of money that could be better spent elsewhere.
