Great question. In 2010, 8,655 Americans were serving as Peace Corps volunteers in 77 host countries so clearly there is a large interest. In the lifetime of the program there have been over 200,000 volunteers. I personally would love to serve in the Peace Corp. It would be hard to decide if I had a preference for country. My background in French would make me more comfortable feeling like I could make a difference already knowing the language. But, it would be most important to me, as it likely is to most volunteers, that I have a connection and true belief is what I am discussing. Out of the current movements I would be most interested in an environmental education effort.
ReplyDeleteMaybe someday!
Personally, I feel like I would be happy to serve my country overseas if I was drafted into the military. I come from a military family and was raised to respect the service that soldiers do for our country. I definitely wouldn't be happy about the situation, but would gladly serve if it was asked of me. As for the peace corps aspect, I do not think that I would serve in the peace corps. I have looked at the program and it just doesn't appeal to me. While I know that what the peace corps does is important, I just don't feel like it something I would be good at.
ReplyDeleteThanks MacKenzie for the data, that is indeed a great number of Americans serving overseas. I must say, Impressive. And Zak,thank you for your response. And, yes foreign military service is necessary, but the question remains, after the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, how many young people and families still share your opinion?
